Dr. Brian Cassetta, MD, is a graduate of Georgetown University and now serves our local community, as a specialist in Internal Medicine.

There is certainly a huge role for medications and procedures in modern medicine but there is nothing that I can prescribe that matches the benefits of diet and exercise. 

About 10 months ago I became a member, when my clinic got involved in a corporate challenge. I have always enjoyed exercising, and in years past I have competed in many events, including biathlons and triathlons.

After working out with the coaches and other members at Journey fitness for about three months, I felt like I was in better shape than I had been in 20 years. Ironically I was spending less time exercising but getting better results.

A typical workout starts with a warm-up session, which lasts a few minutes. Then we split up into smaller groups and rotate through 4-6 different exercises, 2 or 3 times around. Each exercise last for 30 to 40 seconds, with 10 seconds in between. This takes about 12-15 minutes, followed by a brief break. Then we start another 12-15 minute session, followed by a few minutes of a group exercise, and then a cool down session. Many of the exercises use body weight such as planks, pushups and burpees. We also use kettle bells, dumbbells, TRX straps, jam balls, boxes and other fun stuff. The exercises can be modified to allow everyone to participate. All of this takes about 50 minutes, but the time goes by very fast.

With just three sessions a week you can expect to see results. When you start to see results it becomes much easier to follow a healthy lifestyle.

You will burn fat and build muscle.

You will improve your strength and endurance.

You will improve your balance and flexibility.

You will make new friends and probably run into some old friends.

All of this while having a good time and improving your health."
