A few months back, Cyndy & I had the pleasure to be invited to Michael Godard’s house.
I was lucky enough to be able to snag him for a quick interview while we were there.
He is a truly incredible human being and I wanted to make sure I could give you the opportunity to get to know him like I do.
Here is our interview:
Travis: “You are somebody who has overcome a lot of adversities. You have had struggles. If you could share something with our group, what would it be?”
Michael Goddard: “If you have a dream, you don’t give up on it no matter what the obstacle is. We all have drama… We all plan our day and it always goes sideways… The most important thing is that if you’re passionate about something and you’re willing to work hard at it, it will happen for you. You have to believe in yourself.
I sell my art all over the world and there are still articles that come out saying I’m the worst artist in the world. I think to myself, ‘Ok fine.. you think that!’ How many times to critics say that a movie is terrible? I look at the popcorn and see how many people liked it.
I don’t listen to anybody. I do my own thing.
I lost my daughter when she was 16 years old to brain cancer. I have filed for bankruptcy 3 different times. I’ve been on the bottom and on the top.
When I first started painting, I had lost my job as an engineer and I lived in my car for almost 3 months.
You just can’t let fear rule your life. You gotta be fearless. You gotta be willing to do what you love and you gotta work hard at it. Laziness doesn’t get you there.”
Travis: WOW! We couldn’t agree more. Our wall at journey fitness says “Never give up!”
I then talked with him about naysayers #ignorethem
Michael Goddard: “If you never attract criticism, you’re playing life way too safe. You gotta follow your own path and not give up. The obstacles don’t stop coming. They never do.
It doesn’t matter how old you are, drama happens to everyone. It’s how you REACT to it.
What happens to you is meaningless. It’s how you REACT to it. Everyone has a story. Everyone’s been through hell. It’s what you do about it.”
We had such a great time touring around his place and talking with him.
My biggest takeaways were:
For me, it’s about studying people who have taken their passion, made it their purpose, and gave it to the world. "The meaning of life is to discover your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away." - Picasso
It’s our job to discover what we were created for. It’s our job to then give it to the world. And to give it to the world in as big a way as possible.
What is your purpose? How can you turn it into your job?
